Visitor’s Guide

The Painted Rock Petroglyph Site southwest of Phoenix, Arizona is a popular destination with tourists. It is also a fragile site with significant ancestral connections to modern Tribes. Featuring hundreds of stunning yet delicate petroglyph panels of cultural significance, this site’s longevity depends entirely upon guests visiting respectfully. To help guests better understand the rules of visiting—and the why behind them—Archaeology Southwest partnered with the Bureau of Land Management to make a visitor’s brochure available to guests of the site.

Offered in two languages (English and Spanish), the brochure provides readers with a map, rules, and helpful information. Additionally, it pairs high-quality photographs of the site with deeper information about the meaning and significance of the cultural resources on display. While designing the layout and selecting the photos for this brochure, I worked to emphasize the beauty and fragility of this site throughout, while keeping to a calm, blue color palette to subtly encourage readers to be thoughtful, respectful, and contemplative during their visit.
